Although the city of Bath may trace its origin to its famous hot springs, without fresh cold water no settlement would have been possible. The location of the city, set in the Avon valley means there has always been a plentiful supply of water from springs and streams, the River Avon and its tributaries. Without these sources of cold water, Bath would never have become the city it did. Water mills would not have turned, textiles would not have been woven, a wide range of products from beer to plasticine and from gas to corsets would not have been manufactured, beautiful bridges would not have been built and boats would not have been able to transport goods east and west. This book examines the influence of fresh water on the historical development of the city and its immediate area, both from the River Avon, as well as from its surrounding local streams, springs and canals.
