This is an entertaining and detailed account of the policing of that part of Gloucestershire which lies between the rivers Severn and Wye, written by two ex-Forest of Dean policemen. Delving right back into the origins of the police in this area, the narrative examines the rigours and dangers of being a policeman in the 19th century (the only Gloucestershire police officers murdered on duty were both killed in Dean in the 1890s), the development of rural mobile policing through the 20th century and comes up to date with a look at what faces the local force in the 21st century. The second part of the book traces and illustrates all of the known police stations which have at one time or another fallen into the Forest of Dean District, from Dymock and Redmarley in the north, to Ashleworth in the east, and Tutshill and Tidenham in the south. Many of the policemen who served in them also feature, whilst a separate appendix covers the men who served in the Specials during WW2. With over 250 photographs and maps, this is a work which will be welcomed and enjoyed by all those interested in the history of the Forest of Dean, by those interested in the police in general and also by anyone trying to trace family history connections in the area covered.
