The largest village in the Forest and one of the largest in England, Bream can trace its history back over 700 years, whilst the nearby ancient mining site known as The Devil's Chapel was created during Roman times. Although much of its later history and prosperity were closely tied with deep coal mining, Bream was also essentially a rural community and several of the surrounding farms and estates were established by the 17th century. Modern Bream, however, despite the increase in housing, is nowhere near the self-sufficient village of earlier times, the age of the motor car have brought about the closure of many of the local shops and businesses which once existed. The pictures in this book will hopefully bring back memories for older villagers, whilst the text will give newcomers and the younger generation a flavour of the Bream of old.
