Whilst most of present day Lydney was built during the last two hundred years, the town can trace its origins back much earlier, to the time of the Silurian tribespeople, who first settled here over 2,000 years ago, and to the Romans. The underlying deposits of iron ore were extensively mined over the centuries but it was not until the time of the Industrial Revolution that the industry mushroomed, providing the work and the wealth on which the town we know today was built. As the outlet for much of the Forest's industrial produce, Lydney was once a place of much importance. This booklet presents a selection of photographs covering the last 130 years of the town's existence, whilst the introductory text gives a concise account of its history. It will serve to introduce those unfamiliar with the town to its background, whilst providing reminders to those who have lived here all their lives of the way things used to be.
