Trial Colliery

29 May 1872  James Harris, Lydbrook Tinplate Works, had applied for the Trenchard and all veins above and below at or near to the Church, Lydbrook and lying under the Lydbrook Deep Level and Birchen Grove awards.  Having engaged to sell my interest in the above to Messrs. Richard Thomas, anxious at once to open and work these veins.

22 November 1872  Granted.  Trenchard coal lying under and co-extensive with the Lydbrook Deep Level and Birchen Grove awards.

14 March 1878  Richard Thomas - I am a tenant under the Crown of a colliery known as the Trial Colliery.  I have spent £1,400 in endeavouring to prove the existence of the seams of coal.  Not yet successful.  Requesting reduction in dead rent, successful!

28 October 1880  By this date £1,590 spent, works suspended debating opening from a different position.  In 1877 he had agreed to purchase Lydbrook Deep Level and intended to prove the Trenchard from it.

5 August 1884  Trial Colliery in the hands of the Gloucestershire Banking Co.

21 October 1884  Forfeited.

TRIAL COLLIERY No. 2
7 March 1904  Granted to W. H. Fryer.  R. Thomas wished to prove and if possible work the coal.

24 August 1907  R. Thomas to surrender.  No pits.

March 1908  Surrendered.
