Smith's Delight

20 January 1873  Mr Thomas Smith applied 7 December 1872 for a pit at the deep side of Haywood Pit to get coal from the Hill Delf coal.

8 March 1873  Some objections that strip of coal too narrow to work.  M. Crawshay undertakes to win the coal by sinking his Haywood Pumping Pit to the required depth.

16 May 1873  to Thomas Smith, of Cinderford, coal in Coleford High Delf vein.

16 November 1885  This gale will shortly be exhausted, gave notice to surrender.

26 April 1887  Gale 58 chains long, 1 chain wide, purchased by Littledean Woodside Coal Co. and worked by them.  Company found it necessary to borrow from the Standard building Society.
Company liquidatedin 1882 when Mr. Crawshay carried on the mine as best he could until 1885 when the Standard Building Society wound up, threatening to sell colliery.  Crawshay induced friends to find capital.
