1838  Prospectus for Lydney & Forest of Dean Coal Company
A Colliery called 'Pillowell Level' at Pillowell, held by lease for the remainder of a term of 99 years, commencing 2 February 1832, at the yearly rent of 10s payable to teh lessees & a small gale rent to the Crown of £1 11s 6d per annum, capable of yielding the same coal as above [the Kidnalls, Whitington, Yorkley & Trenchard plus High Delf.]

1841  James Morrell and Robert Morrell as assignees of a lease granted by John Phipps and Free Miner, for 99 years from 2 February 1832.
Since the passing of the Act subject to a claim by Elizabeth Cheese as a mortgagee.
All that tract of coal in the Weavers' or Yorkley vein.

Pillowell Level served Rudge, Unity, Nags Head, Pillowell Level Colliery, Random Shot Pit (on Pillowell Engine), Bailey Hill, Yorkley Court (ventilation shaft), Howbeach and Blackpool Collieries.

5 May 1869 Pillowell Engine & Rudge gales for sale.  Owners of Rudge Revd. James Williams, Henry Richards Lückes, Francis Nash, William Taylor.

31 January 1870  'Some years ago a free drainage level across the measures called the Pillowell Level was driven to work the coal in the Coleford High Delf seam in the Unity Colliery and levels to the South West and North East were driven in that seam.
Unity was now owned by:-
Samuel Charles Evan Williams of Rhayader
Herbert Owen Johnes of Old Forge House, Monmouth
& John Maurice Herbert of Rocklands near Ross.
George Atkinson tenant.
To use Pillowell Level including siding.

4 October 1876 Messrs. Lückes, Nash & Co. [probably since 1866/68 - Pillowell Colliery Co.?  Certainly 14 September 1872]

1877  Lückes & Nash looking for a buyer.

14 July 1880 S&W Min.  Mr. Atkinson applies for rebate from Pillowell Level.

August 1880  Atkinson still working.

July 1881  Simeon Holmes lessee

13 August 1883 Simeon Holmes - had been working coal cut under Lydney Park Estate through Pillowell Level, working the Unity Colliery gale and Nags Head Colliery gale.

19 January 1884  Simeon Holmes deceased

4 January 1886  Notice to Mr. Thomas Astle to cease bringing any coal from Mr. Bathursts land through the Pillowell Level.  Had been doing this in December 1885.

15 January 1886  Mr. Peter Holmes doing as above, notice sent.

30 July 1886  Pillowell & Nags Head Steam Coal Collieries applying to lease land at Whitecroft.  Simeon O. Holmes, Holmes Bros & Co.

23 May 1890  Conveyance to Akerman [F3 698]

6 June 1890  Messrs. Evans Williams & W. Owen Johnes the present owners of Pillowell, Yorkley and Unity gales, sold them to Mr. H. E. Collins.
With regard to the first of these it is held by Evans, Williams and Johnes as assignees of a lease granted by John Phipps to Jacob Jenkins from 2 February 1832
Crown stated that in 1841 gale granted to James & Robert Morrell.

5 February 1892  The Dean Forest Navigation Coal & Fuel Company.  We beg to ask if you will forgo the wayleave upon coal worked from the Pillowell gale and conveyed through Bailey Hill gale.  There is no barrier between the two.

29 February 1892  Major Collins owner of Pillowell Level.  Major Collins and Major Howell who together form the Dean Forest Navigation Coal & Fuel Co. owned Pillowell Level, Bailey Hill, Yorkley, Howbeach Engine, New Rudge and Nags Head Colliery.

29 June 1893  Conveyance Akerman to Howell [F3 698]

26 May 1896  Metropolitan Bank, Birmingham desirous of surrendering whole of gales belonging to them.
9 June 1898  For Sale By Auction.  Formerly worked by the Dean Forest Navigation Coal & Fuel Co.
The mining estate is situated at Whitecroft in the Forest of Dean and comprises the following:- Pillowell Level, Pillowell Engine or Random Shot, Yorkley, Bailey Hill, Howbeach and Blackpool Collieries, Whitecroft Fuel Works and various houses and lands.
There is a station at Whitecroft on the Severn & Wye and the colliery office is at the station.  There are sidings to the Pillowell Colliery and the Fuel Works.  The Dean Forest Central Railway runs close to Howbeach Colliery and there is a siding to the pits mouth.
PILLOWELL LEVEL COLLIERY
Having a siding to the Severn & Wye.  Coleford High Delf worked by a cross measure.  Buildings include Smithy, Engine Shed, Carpenters Shop, and Office, Men's shanty, Stabling for ten horses and two cottages.  Machinery and plant includes horizontal (Clarke & Hyde) winding engine, three multitubular boilers, two semi-portable boilers.  Fan & engine, colliery rails, railway sidings, screens, pulsometer, deane pump, worthington pump, ropes, piping about 115 trams etc.

October 1902  Had not worked for five years.  Metroplitan Bank of England & Wales. [F3 698]

15 December 1902 Metropolitan Bank desirous of surrendering whole of gales belonging to them

1 August 1907  Present owners of Pillowell Level: the Wallsend Colliery Co..

9 July 1910  No surface occupied by the Wallsend Co. and they do not intend working Pillowell Level.
