Hilliers Land

30 August 1842  to Isaac Jones, of Poolway, to the Coleford High Delf vein of coal situate at Hilliersí Land near a farm in the occupation of Mr. James Jones, in freehold land the property of Edward Machin, Esquire.  Bounded on the west by the fence of Mailscot Wood.

Original grant by Machin - he never issued a certificate.

1855  Such a certificate ought to be granted to Mr. Henry B. Nicholls - he became a bankrupt and the papers were lodged with Messrs. Bailey bankers of Monmouth.
Richard Court bought gale from Nicholls eldest son.

14 August 1855  Richard Court, William Thomas and William Cooper applying for the grant of the gale.  Messrs. Bailey, Greatrex & Co. mortgagees.

1859  Henry Nicholls to Richard Court, William Thomas and Thomas & William Cooper.  Then in bits to Benjamin Edwards.

6 August 1861  Mr. Jeffs - I have purchased Hillers Land gale and attempted to open by an old level situated north west of the Forest near Mailscot Wood.  Wished to make a 40 yard cross cut.
Wishing to sink a pit, cut out to secure drainage ëno steam engine to be erectedí.

9 August 1865  Mr. Benjamin Edwards.

1867  to Simeon Holmes - sells or leases it to Carter.

1874  Holmes to Railton & Thompson, both Hilliers Land and Farmers Folly gales.

1885  Purchased by Mr. Shadrach Hughes at public auction

2 September 1887  Mr. Shadrach Hughes, Beeches Farm, Coleford.  Not worked for five years

18 November 1910  Shadrach Hughes wishing to drive a new level

1912-13  Easement to haul coal over road to Slaughter Siding.  New level complete.

1931  Distraint for Edward Hughes rent.  Edward Hughes had committed suicide on 8 May.

3 August 1932  Auction at Angel Hotel - no bid.

2 November 1932  Proposed sale at 2.30.  Did not take place.  See also Speedwell.

10 December 1932  Sale of plant at Thatch and Hilliersland.

16 February 1933  Sale at Hilliersland £50.

9 October 1933  George Hughes & Shadrach Hughes paying rents.

1936  Re-galed to Free Miners then to Joseph and Sydney Gwilliam.
