28 February 1859  Granted to William Phipps, of Pillowell, for a pit situate at Howbeach Valley, 60 yards due west by compass from a cottage now occupied by James Birt, near Wallsend Level mouth, on the south side of the turnpike road leading from Parkend to Blakeney, to get the coal from the Trenchard veins.

19 December 1873  Re-galed as New Defiance to William Brown of Littledean Lane End.
