This account sets out, for what is believed to be the first time, the sequence, materials, methods and operational context for the construction and commissioning in 1751 of an early Newcomen ‘atmospheric’ pumping engine at Coalpit Heath in South Gloucestershire. It is based on a possibly unique complete set of surviving bills from the suppliers and contractors concerned with the building of the engine. These are supported by contemporary maps, related archival materials and component illustrations to explain how the engine was built.
