From 'Moor Street Station 1894-1916': With its opening to traffic, the upper yard was transformed, as this fine period shot from May 1915 shows. The yard sidings are packed with a varied collection of open wagons and vans, and a number of the railway‘s horse-drawn delivery drays can also be seen. Amongst the wagons on view, the ventilated van on the right is a MINK A, built in 1907 to diagram V12, Lot No. 545. On the left, the 4-plank 10-ton open goods wagon No. 54548 was one of a batch of 200 built circa 1900 to Lot No. L12, whilst further down the row is iron MINK No. 69663, of Lot No. L255. Beyond the hoist in the background can be seen one of the mechanical wagon lifts which provided access to the two lower sheds. The yard’s role in supplying Birmingham’s main fruit and veg market is clear from the piles of empty baskets on view. ~ Ray Shill collection
