From: Kerne Bridge A different aspect, showing the full structure of the toll house, the steps leading down beside it and the north side of the bridge around 1930. The abutment wing wall of the railway bridge just features in the left foreground. Note that ‘Monmouth’ has now been added to the ‘shortest route’ board. This postcard is the work of another Ross-based photographer, G. W. Young.

From: Horse Haulage in the South Wales Coalfield Three wagons (drams in South Wales) of coal wait to be tipped on the ‘fulls’ road in this picture with the horse ‘Steel’ and collier waiting for the extra wagon to be attached on the empties road. There was a visible ‘bond’ between this collier and Steel, which was nice to see, with a mutual respect for the effort required from them both. Steel was eating a polo mint – a necessity before he would enter the level again.
