From 'British Atlantic Locomotives' : Another ten were built at Darlington in 1910, numbered 696-705, of which the last is illustrated. They differed in having narrow and subsidiary splashers in place of the wide ones on the originals and large convex frame projections ahead of the smokebox, as seen here. A later visible change was the replacement of Ramsbottom safety valves in a large brass casing with the unconcealed Ross pop valves seen here on No. 705. The class was superheated between 1914 and 1920, and as L&NER Class ‘C6’ continued to serve in gradually more humble roles until withdrawn in the 1940s, the last two in 1948.
