This book takes a tour around many of the narrow gauge railways in Austria whilst they were still being used as part of the local transport system. Most of the photographs depict the lines as they were some forty to fifty years ago and capture, with some nostalgia, their friendly nature just before their decline. Luckily many of the lines have been preserved or continue to flourish following modernisation but the era depicted in this book has been lost and can only be remembered through photographs.

Stubaitalbahn. Carriage No. 3, one of three identical vehicles built in 1904, seating thirty-six passengers arrives at Fulpmes about an hour after leaving Innsbruck. When additional capacity was required one of the six trailer cars supplied in 1904 was coupled to the rear. These motor carriages still retained their original open metal gates at each end.

The terminus of the remaining freight only line to Seebach-Turnau was around the corner from Kapfenberg ÖBB Lokalbahnhof. By 1968 three diesels (VL01 Deutz Works No. 36643, built 1942, VL11 Österreichisch – Alpine Montangesellschaft Works No. 2836, built 1964 and VL21 Steinmetz & Gmeinder KG, Works No. 5327, built 1964) provided the main motive power but steam locomotives were kept and used when needed.
