Mitcheldean, situated at the northernmost tip of the Forest of Dean, lies in a bowl in the landscape and was thus a favourite with the photographers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The town is, however, much older than that, able to trace its origins as far back as Domesday at least. Up until relatively recent times, much of the 17th and 18th century parts of the town survived fairly intact but the streets were narrow, and road widening and improvenments in the early 1960s saw the face of Mitcheldean change dramatically. Now, with the news that the town's major employer, Rank Xerox, is to pull out from its 63 acre site almost entirely, Mitcheldean faces a period of uncertainty yet again. The views and memories within these pages, however, will remind everyone that the town and its folk have always survived the changes which inevitably occur over time.
